Nefaria
2007, 12 pillowcases stitched with embroidery thread, dimensions variable.
For Subversion and the Domestic [Roosevelt] posted 12 pillowcases
from America – each beautifully hand-crafted with simple embroidery
stitching – outlining in colored threads objects and signs that
he saw around the estate when he visited Aideen Barry – the House
for Sale sign; a child’s scooter; a wall; a tree; a cloud with
sun. Each element drawn with a double-row of stitching onto cream
pillowcases presents a simple isolated scene, rendering the vernacular
with a mundane pop art detachment. They are as if of disconnected
floating elements in dreams that return to us the peculiar elements
of valid or meaningless psychological phenomenon… its presentation
in the spare bedroom creates a Zen-like atmosphere… evoked within
the uncanny and unreachable zones of daydreams and sleep or the
spaces before death.
