Giuliana Sgrena
2006, latex, acetate, blinking red light, approximately 14 x 10 inches
In 2005, Iraqi rebels took an Italian journalist named Giuliana Sgrena hostage. Like many of the hostages held in Iraq, she appeared on news broadcasts asking for Western countries to comply with her captors' requests. She was eventually freed. On her way to the airport American soldiers opened fire on her car, killing an Italian agent as he acted to protect her.
